Workshop topics
Suneetha Carter. Technique
Cath Connelly. ‘Tips for playing the harp at a Celtic music
session’. As a regular attendee at sessions, I recognise that harpers are
often not sure of how to participate. This is because the music is played
both very fast and with no allowance for sheet music. There are numerous
ways that we harpers can join in and I will explore them in the workshop
Jacinta Dennet. “Please take a seat”
Experience sitting in a whole new light, find the
dynamism in your seat and let gravity empower you and your sound. “Please Take
a Seat” is a playful workshop designed for you to explore and discover the
potential for activity while sitting. You will be guided to let go of
unnecessary grips and grasps thus awakening your whole being to a sense of
freedom and vigor on your seat.
Please wear clothing that is non restrictive
allowing for comfort while seated.
Mary Doumany The Zen OF HARP “Harp
Playing as a Personal Spiritual Practice”……………….Throughout history and myth,
the harp has been recognised as an instrument of transformation, enchantment
and Other Realms. In modern times, its value in therapeutic application has
been verified by science. This
unique workshop is aimed at developing relaxation and meditation skills through
the playing of the harp. Participants
learn to access their intuitive powers for personal well being in a group
environment, with an emphasis on felt experience, rather than technical
achievement.
The
session is aimed at adult beginners who want to develop a new and joyous
association with sound but is suitable for all levels. No musical skills are
required, for we will be approaching the harp from a whole new angle: self
discovery through a personal relationship with sound.
Catherine
Dunlop. Bow Brand harp string
factory is situated in the delightful town of Kings Lynn, Norfolk, UK. A
visit takes the whole morning, and it is the most fascinating experience. Every
harpist should know what tender loving care goes into the making of their
strings, not only gut strings, but wire strings as well. The gut strings
go through many processes. It takes much skill and dedication .
Emma Horwood - Songs of Middle-Earth
J.R.R.
Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy has delighted readers for over
50 years, and the author’s poetry has inspired countless composers to set the
words to music. Come on a magical journey with acclaimed Adelaide soprano and
harpist Emma Horwood as she presents stunning music setting Tolkien’s poetry,
interspersed with reading from the books, including works by English composers
Stephen Oliver and Donald Swan, and Australian composers Helen Cartridge,
Andrew Close, Carl Crossin and Judith Clingan. Be transported by Emma’s crystal
voice and beautiful harp playing in a mix of classical and celtic styles.
Emma Horwood. Singing with your harp
Liza Jensen. Regulating your pedal or lever harp
Louise Johnson. Performance nerves can affect us all at any time in our lives but as we get older we seem to have more to lose. The loss of face or the fear of public embarrassment can be overwhelming, so come and explore some positive ways to "feel the fear and do it anyway!" All ages welcome but this workshop is strongly directed towards the older learner. Participation will be greatly encouraged.
Torin King. "Finger Picking on the Celtic Harp". Spice up your arrangements of traditional tunes with an almost "blues guitar" finger picking technique.
Moira Lawry will
work with the Festival Ensemble over
three days towards a performance on the Monday.
Verna
Lee. Basic chords, jazz chord symbols
and figure bass. Chord charts and symbols. This is not an improvisation class.
It aims to de-code typical chord symbols found on charts, modern music, folk
music etc. It is aimed at harpists of all levels who can read music.
Christine Morphett. Learn a Breton tune from the Dinan Festival.
Claire Patti. Different styles of
Accompaniment
for harp with voice
Sue Raimond. Music to Soothe the Savage Beast (working with animals), the science behind it.
Robin Ward. Playing what's not on the page - An introduction to Baroque music. Focusing on music from the Wemyss lute Book (scots), a brief introduction to ornamentation, variation and filling out the bass line. Music will be of an elementary/Intermediate level of difficulty.
Jayne Hockley. Efficient Exercises for Everyone. With over 25 years of teaching experience, Jayne shares her fun,
fresh approach to technical work in a hands-on workshop. Learn to challenge
yourself and be engaged in exploring and creating exercises that are relevant
to your requirements.
Suitable for all students and teachers.
Please bring, or arrange to share, a harp and music stand.
Handouts provided.
Rosemary Hallo. Lecture/presentation early harp music.
Megan Reeve. Business and Pleasure: facets of freelancing. Musical training, whether formal or informal, rarely incorporates the business skills required for long term operation as a freelance musician. A few make up for this with formal business study, some learn on the job, and I suspect a lot hope that it will all somehow just take care of itself. How do you make it all happen?
